Sewage Treatment Plants

A sewage treatment plant actively treats wastewater — typically using an aerator to introduce oxygen and encourage bacteria to break down waste — before discharging much cleaner water than a septic tank produces. That's why treatment plants can usually discharge directly to a ditch or watercourse under general binding rules, where an equivalent septic tank often cannot.
